Mother as hero. This Mother’s Day was not the c Mother as hero.

This Mother’s Day was not the cliche day of chocolates and sweet motherly moments but one of little sleep, a clogged milk duct and a milk blister. It was both lovely and less than at the same time. Something we aren’t used to accepting about motherhood—the ability to love it and loathe it simultaneously.

Sometimes I wonder if I should be sharing things like this here? Is it too much? An I playing the victim? The truth is, I just want society to more fully embrace the full spectrum of motherhood. The all encompassing physicality of it all. I don’t want pity but I think we could all use a little more compassion or at least education. The first years of motherhood are so incredibly hard on the body—for some much more than others. Caring for a child is not the renaissance painting. It’s so much messier. So much fuller! Of highs and lows and blood and tears and sometimes—a lot of pain.

My long-time friend and now mama of 3 sent me a book excerpt by Jessi Klein that made my eyes well up with tears. “The rage and shock of how completely she (the mother) must annihilate herself to keep her child alive”. Oh gosh do I feel that statement in my freaking bones! Jessi talks about how mothers are the true hero story. How our greatest journey is not one of leaving to explore or discover, as most tales of great men are told, but of staying.

So I raise a toast to all of my client mothers and mother friends who follow me here to say, you are my hero. You are THE hero in your family. Thank you for staying. Thank you for “swallowing the sword”.

And if you’re interested, you must read the excerpt in @thecut @newyorkermag. Link in stories.

Very excited for these 2 pieces to be included in Very excited for these 2 pieces to be included in the @artistmotherpodcast #takingupspace gallery takeover this month. @alisonjudd.art of @gallery.tempo put together an amazing show of 30+ mother/artists in MA that will be hung at @jamesonandthompson in JP. The show is titled “Raw Emotion: Vignettes of Motherhood” and this first image couldn’t be more fitting for the emotion, the second for the vignette.

Image 1: Pandemic Primal Scream Self Portrait

Image 2: Domesticated Lint Art

Both will be up to see with the opening on 5/15. I can’t tell you how much these pieces going out to the world means to me. And to be next to amazing artists like @reneeromeroart @alisonjudd.art @raniamatar @rachelmorrisseyart — what an honor.
